# Food logging by _photo, description, voice, or manual entry_

Choose the fastest capture method for the food in front of you, then review the result before it reaches your diary.

Moodwell Updated September 20, 2026 3 minute read

In brief

Use a food or label photo for a visual starting point, a description or voice entry for ingredients you can name, and manual entry for nutrition details you already know. In Moodwell, check the food match and serving amount before saving it to a meal in your diary.

## Match the capture method to the meal

No single logging method is best for every food. A packaged item, a homemade bowl, and a restaurant meal each provide different information. Choose the method that gives you a useful starting point, then check the result.

- Label photo or manual entry for a packaged food with readable nutrition information
- Photo for a visual starting point when several foods are on the plate
- Description or voice when you can name the ingredients and portions
- Manual entry when you already know the nutrition details you want to record

## Review is part of the log

Scanned and AI-assisted results can be incomplete or wrong. Before saving, confirm the food, serving amount, meal, and nutrition details that matter to you. Adjust the portion to match what you ate rather than accepting the first estimate.

## Handle mixed meals without chasing false precision

For a homemade or restaurant meal, break the plate into the main components you can reasonably identify. Keep ingredient and batch-portion notes outside the app for meals you make often, then log the foods you actually ate. For a one-off meal, a practical estimate may be more useful than spending a long time searching for an exact match that does not exist.

Food logging is an estimate unless every ingredient and amount is measured. Keep that uncertainty in mind when reviewing totals.

## Example: checking a serving before saving

Suppose a food result describes one 30 g serving, but you ate 45 g. Check the product against the package, then record 45 g or 1.5 servings as appropriate for the entry. Saving the default serving would leave out part of what you ate even if the product match was correct.

With a photo of a rice bowl, review whether the result represents the rice, protein, vegetables, and sauce you know were present. A photo may not reveal cooking oil or ingredients under the top layer. The generated result is read-only: revise the description and try again, choose another match, or log known foods manually when it is inaccurate. Then check the day, meal, and portion before saving.

## Reduce effort for foods you repeat

Favorite individual foods that you expect to eat again, or find them in recent foods. Reuse a checked food entry and adjust the portion when today’s amount differs. Keep reusable recipe notes separately; the current food view does not include a recipe or saved-meal builder.

Photo, description, and voice capture use AI credits. Check the displayed cost before submitting a lookup. If you cannot use the camera or microphone, or do not want an AI lookup, use manual entry or a food you have already saved instead.
