The short answer

## Is Cronometer or MyFitnessPal better for food tracking?

Cronometer makes food-source detail and a broad nutrient profile central to its diary. MyFitnessPal offers familiar food logging with paid capture and customization tools. Neither app can make a mismatched food or portion accurate. Compare the entries you actually eat, then the steps needed to keep using them.

A database count is not an accuracy test. The entry, its source and your portion determine what goes into the total.

Start with the same meal in both apps. Check the units. Check the preparation. Check what is missing. That comparison tells you more than a long list of supported nutrients.

## What are the practical differences?

Compare the specific plan and platform you will use.
| Task | Cronometer | MyFitnessPal |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Understand a food entry | [Source types are documented](https://support.cronometer.com/hc/en-us/articles/360018239472-Data-Sources) | Inspect the selected food and its serving information |
| Scan a package | [Barcode scanning listed in Basic](https://cronometer.com/gold/) | [Barcode scanning listed in Premium](https://support.myfitnesspal.com/hc/en-us/articles/360032625951-MyFitnessPal-Premium-features) |
| Capture beyond manual search | [Photo and voice tools listed in Gold](https://cronometer.com/gold/) | [Meal scan and voice tools listed in Premium](https://support.myfitnesspal.com/hc/en-us/articles/360032625951-MyFitnessPal-Premium-features) |
| Plan meals | Check recipe and scheduling tools against your routine | [Meal Planner belongs to Premium+](https://support.myfitnesspal.com/hc/en-us/articles/34347930588557-Premium) |
| Move records out | [Raw-data export available in Basic](https://support.cronometer.com/hc/en-us/articles/360028026971-Subscription-Types) | [File export is a paid-plan feature](https://support.myfitnesspal.com/hc/en-us/articles/360032273352-Export-your-nutrition-progress-and-exercise-data) |

Feature lists change. Regional offers and platform restrictions can also differ. Open the current documentation and the offer shown to your account before purchasing. The table compares documented functions, not outcomes from a controlled test.

## What does a food source tell you?

Cronometer distinguishes [reference composition data, branded label data and custom entries](https://support.cronometer.com/hc/en-us/articles/360018239472-Data-Sources). That distinction matters because each source answers a different question. A reference food describes a representative item. A branded record describes information supplied for that product.

A fuller nutrient panel is not necessarily a more exact match to your lunch. A label-specific food may be appropriate for a packaged serving even when it lacks several micronutrients. A generic entry can add useful detail, but it cannot tell you the exact composition of a particular batch.

Treat missing data as missing. If a nutrient is absent from the source, a blank field does not establish that the food contains none. A complete-looking total can still be based on incomplete entries. Check the source before drawing a conclusion from the chart.

## Why can the same food produce different totals?

First inspect the denominator. A value may be per serving, per package, per weight or for a different preparation. The food name can look right while the basis is wrong. A dry ingredient and the cooked dish do not share the same weight relationship.

Next inspect the portion you entered. A photo estimate, a household measure and a weighed portion have different uncertainty. Changing apps does not remove that uncertainty. It may simply make it less visible.

For a repeat meal, save the version you have checked. Include enough information in the name to recognize it later, especially when similar items appear in search. Reusing a reviewed entry reduces the chance of quietly switching sources each time.

For a mixed dish, keep the recipe and serving assumptions together. If the batch produces a different number of portions, change that assumption. Do not treat an old serving total as fixed when the preparation changed.

## Which logging method saves useful effort?

A barcode can narrow the product match. It still leaves the quantity to confirm. Voice can describe a meal quickly. It still needs an interpretation of food and portion. A photograph can preserve context. It may not reveal ingredients hidden inside the dish.

Test the complete sequence. Log the meal, correct one detail, save it, find it tomorrow and change the portion. Count the decisions that remain difficult, rather than only the taps at the start. A fast capture followed by a confusing correction is not necessarily faster in daily use.

A saved meal can be more useful than a new recognition feature if your breakfasts repeat. A detailed recipe tool can matter more than restaurant coverage if you cook most meals at home. The relevant benchmark is your pattern of eating.

## Which app fits your record?

Choose around the task. Cronometer deserves a close look when interpreting nutrient fields and their sources is central. MyFitnessPal deserves a close look when its familiar diary and saved foods already reduce daily effort. Neither requires a universal winner.

Compare the paid tier only after that test. A lower annual amount is not savings if you stop using the diary. Equally, paying for advanced analysis adds little when you never revisit it. Use your actual checkout amount and renewal interval.

If the missing task is reviewing meals beside workouts or mood, that is a different comparison. [Moodwell’s food tracker](https://www.moodwell.ai/nutrition/food-tracker) sits within a broader daily record. It does not make every specialist nutrition function interchangeable. Read [food capture methods](https://www.moodwell.ai/guides/food-logging-photo-barcode-or-manual) for the review step that applies whichever app you choose.

A little more context

## Questions, answered

**Is Cronometer more accurate than MyFitnessPal?**

A blanket accuracy ranking would require a defined benchmark. Cronometer documents its source categories clearly. Your diary still depends on choosing a matching food, understanding missing fields and entering an appropriate portion.

**Is barcode scanning free in both apps?**

Cronometer lists barcode scanning in Basic. MyFitnessPal lists it among Premium tools. Check the current offer for your account and region before relying on a feature comparison.

**Why are micronutrient totals incomplete?**

Some entries come from labels that do not list every nutrient. Missing fields are not evidence that the food contains zero. A report can only summarize the information available in the foods you logged.

**Can I export my nutrition history?**

Both vendors document export options, with different plan rules and contents. Cronometer lists raw-data export in Basic; MyFitnessPal’s file export requires Premium or Premium+. An export does not guarantee compatibility with another app.
