Keep kitchen notes for the ingredients you actually use
Write down your recipe outside the app, calculate your share, then log confirmed ingredient foods in Moodwell.
In brief
Keep the whole recipe’s ingredients, amounts and division into portions in your own kitchen notes. Calculate the share you ate outside the app, then log the corresponding foods and quantities in Moodwell, checking each serving reference.
Decide what belongs inside this recipe
Start with one dish you already make, such as a pot of soup or a breakfast mixture. In a notebook or your usual notes tool, list what goes into the whole dish. Define whether toppings and sides are included. A clear boundary keeps you from counting bread, dressing or cheese both inside and outside your calculation.
Give those notes a name that distinguishes the dish from similar versions. Tomato soup with beans is more informative than dinner. These are your own cooking notes, separate from Moodwell. The app lets you capture and log foods; it does not turn this ingredient list into a saved recipe or meal bundle.
Review the ingredient records before the total
Read the serving information for each ingredient you want to log. Match the brand when it matters, and check descriptors such as dry, cooked or drained. Write the unit beside the amount in your notes. A plausible batch total can conceal a mismatched food or a number copied without its unit.
Write the amount used in the entire recipe first, then calculate the share represented by your portion. Include known ingredients that are easy to overlook, such as a sauce mixed into the dish. Do not invent quantities for a recipe you did not make; an explicitly approximate dish capture may be more honest.
Worked example: a four-serving bean soup
You make a pot of soup using beans, tomatoes, broth and vegetables, then divide the evenly mixed pot into four comparable portions. Your notes say the batch used 400 g of beans. One portion therefore represents 100 g of those beans. Work through the other ingredients with the same quarter-batch calculation.
In Moodwell, log the corresponding ingredient foods for the portion you ate, checking each food’s serving reference. Keep bread outside that calculation if it was a side. Log the bread separately on the meals where you eat it. Do not log an additional whole-soup estimate on top of the same ingredient entries.
If the available portion steps cannot represent your calculated amount, manual entry lets you define a food with its serving amount and known nutrition figures. Use information you can support, including any calculation from a label. Do not choose an unrelated portion just to fit the control.
Move from kitchen notes to a food log
- 1
Write the ingredients
List the foods used in the whole dish in your own notes. Include the quantity and unit for each one.
- 2
Work out your share
Use the batch division to calculate the ingredient amounts represented by your portion. Keep assumptions about uneven portions visible.
- 3
Choose matching food records
Use known foods from your history or capture supported information. Check each serving reference before selecting the amount to log.
- 4
Confirm the meal
Add the actual ingredient portions to the correct day and meal. Check that a combined estimate has not already logged the same food.
Review the record when the recipe changes
A substitution can make yesterday’s kitchen notes describe an older version of your dish. Update the list when quantities or ingredients change. You can favorite individual foods in Moodwell to make them easier to find again, while keeping the recipe calculation outside the app. This separates reusable food matches from the amount of each ingredient you ate today.
